In Hard-Boiled Wonderland , the unnamed narrator is a “calcutec” working for the System, in a near-future (?) alternate Japan where information is the ultimate currency. Murakami divided Hard-Boiled Wonderland into two realms. The first realm, the Hard-Boiled wonderland, is a perplexing look at the unnamed Narrator’s physical and conscious reality. This reality is shown through the Narrator’s enthusiasm for food and sex.

This futuristic tale begins intriguingly enough, with a garrulous young man who ascends in a spacious elevator to a corridor where a plump young woman waits to escort him to a closet, at the bottom of which is a chasm with a river running through it.
